Time Commitment & Minimum Qualifications

Due to the nature of our work and the instrumental role volunteers play, it is especially important that our volunteers stand as exemplary models of professionalism and are able to truly commit the necessary time and energy to their assigned role. Please read the information below carefully before submitting an application.

 How to Become a Volunteer

  1. Complete the volunteer application form

  3. Receive email invitation for an in-person interview
  4. Acceptance into training class 
  5. Participate in our mandatory volunteer training program
  6. Receive your start date and placement

Upcoming Volunteer Training 

  • The next training opportunities will be in 2020 on the following dates:
    • First training of 2020 - January 27th, 28th, 31st, February 3rd, 4th and 7th
    • Second training of 2020 - May 25th, 26th, 27th, June 1st, 2nd and 3rd
    • Third training of 2020 - September 28th, 29th, 30th, October 5th, 6th and 7th

**All training will be held from 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm at Briarpatch Youth Services office

                                     

We have the following volunteer opportunities available:

Runaway and Homeless Youth Program:

  • 8-10 Volunteer Counselor positions
  • Must be 17 or older
  • Commit to one year of volunteer service
  • Attend 20 hours of volunteer training
  • Agree to a background check
  • Provide 6 hours of service per week
  • Availability needed Monday - Friday, 9 am - 6 pm preferred, some evening availability
  • Able to engage with and demonstrate empathy towards a vulnerable population
  • Sorry, there is no service learning or volunteer opportunities for course credit
  • Duties include:
    • Support on the Briarpatch Help Line
    • Provide support in counseling sessions and intakes
    • Support staff with files and data collection

 Youth Shelter

  • 2-3 Shelter volunteer positions
  • Must be 18 or older
  • Commit to one year of volunteer service
  • Attend 20 hours of volunteer training and on-the-shift training
  • Agree to a background check, TB Test, fingerprint check and possible CPR certification training
  • Provide 3-4 hours of service per week
  • Availability needed Monday - Friday, 6 pm - 10 pm and hours available during the weekend
  • There is a possibility for service learning, depending on the course requirements
  • Duties include:
    • Engage with youth in shelter and during outings/group activities
    • Provide support to staff in daily living activities (cooking and cleaning)
    • Support staff with files and date collection

 

  The above programs are the only current needs we have. Check back for updates to volunteer needs in other programs as they arise.
